Michael Ballard, Ph.D.

Licensed Psychologist, Director of Business Operations

Families can be a source of tremendous joy, and also a source of immeasurable stress. When there are problems at home, this tension can rob you of your peace, steal your joy, and keep you up late at night trying to figure out what to do. When someone in your family is suffering from depression, anger, anxiety, or substance abuse, it can be an overwhelming experience.

As a licensed psychologist, I’m thankful for the training I’ve received in how to work with adults, adolescents, and families. However, my journey to becoming a counselor started long before graduate school. I grew up in a family that dealt with many of these issues, and of course, I’ve worked through some of them myself. So when I meet with people who are struggling, it’s more than simply a professional encounter for me. My clients often tell me that I “get it,” because frequently I can understand where they are coming from.

As hard as those times have been, I believe that my life experiences and my professional training have uniquely prepared me to help others who are dealing with these problems. Fifteen years ago I started working with adults, adolescents, and families in community mental health centers, schools, university counseling centers, and private practice. Since that time I have earned a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and have become a Certified Anger Management Specialist. I have then presented at local and national conferences, and have recently published the book Take Control of Your Anger.

It is my mission–and not just my job–to help those who are hurting, of course to help teens get back on track, to help adults who are struggling with anger, anxiety, and depression, and to help families thrive again. I work collaboratively with my patients to create specific treatment goals, and then correspondingly work towards them with support and accountability. As a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, moreover I believe that people can change, and that life can get better. If you or someone you love are dealing with any of these issues, it would be my honor to walk through this journey with you.
